quilt-y summer pleasures

And for the lady, perhaps a light quilt to ward off the summer breezes and burrow under with a good book? Heavy Midwest winter gear is in storage. Large, fuzzy blankets are out (at least for two months?); thinner, patterned quilts are in. Quilted floral layers, especially Indian kantha quilts, bring a perfect touch of light warmth and cheery energy to your summer decor.

And for the lady, perhaps a light quilt to ward off the summer breezes and burrow under with a good book? Heavy Midwest winter gear is officially in storage. Large, fuzzy blankets are out (at least for two months?); thinner, patterned quilts are in. Quilted floral layers, especially Indian kantha quilts, bring the perfect touch of light warmth and cheery energy to your summer decor. Here are some I love.

What makes a quilt a “kantha” quilt? Its use of traditional Bengali stitching, which is a straight running stitch, to quilt two layers of fabric together to create a lightweight and textured covering with no batting between the layers. The quilts I own have a simple white back, which adds to their fresh look. All of these are high quality, 100 percent cotton at great prices, and many come in several sizes so you can use them either as a sofa throw or on your bed.

Handmade floral kantha quilt, pink, SavittiCreations, Etsy
I have a version of this handmade quilt in my office, and my cats enjoy it every day. It’s large and beautiful, a real work of art. The primary colors in mine are pink, gold, and green on a cream background.

Hand block printed floral kantha quilt, grey, SavitriVreations, Etsy
The third kantha quilt I own is no longer available, but is almost identical to this pretty grey and white block print pattern. There are a few patterns like this in varying shades of grey, so just do a search to find the tone and price you like.

Handmade bird and floral kantha quilt, teal, GenuineFabricWorld, Etsy
This must be a trending traditional fabric, because several options of this quilt are available. What a fun and pretty pattern! I’m a fan of fabrics combining birds and florals.

Here’s a traditional floral option with a black background for dark academia decor.

If you’re not picky about color or pattern and love a boho look, this wholesale lot features FIVE quilts made of vintage saris in lovely colors. This would be perfect for a teen’s room or rec room. Here’s
another option as well with a slightly different style. There are several of these from different sellers and in different quantities, so simply search for kantha on the site.

Hand embroidered kantha cotton voile quilt, suzani pattern, Creative Co-Op, Wayfair
Creative Co-Op often surprises and delights me with its interesting items, and this quilt is no exception. I love both block print and suzani ethnic fabrics, and this pattern combines Indian kantha stitching with a traditional suzani pattern, which is native to the “stans” — Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Afghanistan. The blend of red, aqua blue, and brown is also unexpected but lovely.

The following are light summer quilts that are not in the kantha style.

Blooming Prairie quilted patchwork throw, Greenland Home, Amazon
Not a kantha quilt, this light summer patchwork quilt features a variety of cottagecore sweet florals, including block print and vintage look grandma chic.

Classic traditional antique rose floral cotton quilt, Greenland Home Fashions, Amazon
This sweet antique rose floral featuring pinks, golds, and greens on a cream background could not be more feminine and cottagecore.

Antique chic quilted patchwork throw, Greenland Home Fashions, Amazon
I’m not always a fan of patchwork, but I love the interesting stitching and earthy florals of this 100 percent cotton quilt throw. It definitely would fit in my decor. (Adds to list,)

French country toile reversible cotton throw, yellow and grey, Lush Decor, Amazon
Where would cottage style be without florals and toile? This pretty traditional pattern in gold and grey features a farmhouse charcoal and white stripe on its reverse.

Provence washed linen Victorian toile comforter set, HiEnd Accents, Amazon
While not exactly a quilt, I’ve been in love with this pricey three-piece linen and cotton set for awhile. I love the earthy blue, green, and gold tones with red accents and the traditional toile print. It truly looks vintage, like it’s been passed down from your ancestors who served in the Tudor court.

Summer was made for quilt-y pleasures. Enjoy the sun, and the cheery energy light quilts can bring to your decor.
